Fact Sheet
"Whether Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal, white or black, gay or straight, Christian or atheist, we don't have to agree with each other on anything, or even get along well-but we should treat each other civilly."
-Mark DeMoss, Founder
CivilityProject.org
What
CivilityProject.org is a voluntary, grassroots movement of people from diverse backgrounds who agree that solutions to our most pressing problems will be found only through a more civil exchange of ideas.
CivilityProject.org challenges all people, not just politicians, to bring back civility and respectability as staples of American politics and life.
The Civility Pledge
Everyone is invited to join in this grassroots effort by simply committing to the Civility Pledge found at CivilityProject.org.
- I will be civil in my public discourse and behavior.
- I will be respectful of others whether or not I agree with them.
- I will stand against incivility when I see it.
To date, individuals from diverse political, ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds, representing more than 49 states and 20 countries, have taken the Civility Pledge.
Who
Behind CivilityProject.org are "odd couple" Mark DeMoss, an evangelical conservative who supported the Mitt Romney campaign, and Lanny Davis, a liberal of the Jewish faith and long-time Clinton advisor. Although the two agree on almost nothing, they share at least one opinion - it is necessary to have healthy debates - and even stiff arguments - without resorting to demonizing the other side if we are to find solutions to today's most pressing issues.
"We found ourselves drawn to each other's love for this country and a conviction about the importance to its future of trying to change the polarizing, attack-oriented political culture that has become all too common in recent years and, instead, to bring civility back as the staple of American politics and life."
- Lanny Davis and Mark DeMoss, Op. Ed., The Washington Times, Jan. 18, 2009
