Jets’ Curtis Martin Wins 2006 Bart Starr Award
Martin Honored for Exemplary Character and Leadership in the Home, on the Field, and in the Community
DETROIT, Feb. 4, 2006—As national sports media and fans gather this weekend in preparation for another Super Bowl duel, this morning's spotlight was on a favorite Super Bowl tradition-the presentation of the 18th annual Bart Starr Award. This year's award-a merit which honors exemplary character and leadership in the home, on the field, and in the community-went to New York Jets' running back Curtis Martin.
"Curtis Martin is an exceptional recipient because he embodies the criteria, showing compassion and dedication to those less fortunate," said Bart Starr.
Martin was recognized this morning during the annual NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast, hosted by Athletes in Action, at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center. The event program featured Bart Starr, Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy, NFL Hall of Famer Lem Barney, Detroit Lions' Jason Hanson and Robert Porcher III, and former Bart Starr Award recipients Anthony Munoz and Brent Jones.
"I think everybody has a gift that they're supposed to help the world with," said Martin. "Outside of my ability to reach other people, in my mind there's no need for football, there's no need for fame, there's no need for fortune."
The winner of the Bart Starr Award is determined by NFL player balloting at the end of the regular season, making the award one of the few individual honors selected by the players themselves. The award, bearing the name of NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr, honors Starr's lifelong commitment to serving as a positive role model to his family, teammates, and community.
Other award finalists included Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts; Donovan McNabb, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles; and Tony Richardson, fullback for the Kansas City Chiefs. A Bart Starr Award special featuring the four finalists will air on FOX Sports Net, Feb. 6 and 11. For more broadcast information, visit www.superbowlbreakfast.com/tv.asp.
