Jake Barnes Ropes In the 2006 Legends of ProRodeo Award
Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Weekend: Jake Barnes to Receive Esteemed Award at the Legends of ProRodeo Breakfast in Las Vegas, Dec. 1
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 15, 2006—World-renowned team roper Jake Barnes has roped in yet another honor, but not for his skill in the arena. Barnes has been selected as winner of the Legends of ProRodeo Award-a merit which honors exemplary character and leadership in the home, in the arena, and in the community.
A seven-time world team roping title champion, Barnes was well known in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). But after losing the thumb of his roping hand during the fifth round of the 2005 Wrangler National Finals, Barnes' career became legendary. For although doctors were unable to reattach his thumb, Barnes worked to re-master the skill of roping, and continues to have success in the arena.
"The more I've matured, I've realized that the world doesn't revolve around me. There are others less fortunate; we need to have compassion and be ready to help," said Barnes. "It is an honor to be chosen for the Legends of ProRodeo Award. I was brought up being taught that your word and integrity are everything-I've strived to carry that out throughout my professional career."
Barnes will be recognized at the annual PRCA-sanctioned Legends of ProRodeo Breakfast - part of the 48th annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the sport's "Super Bowl." The Legends of Pro Rodeo Breakfast is one of five Sports Legend Series events sponsored by Athletes in Action, designed to honor athletes and coaches who model exemplary character, values, integrity, and faith.
"Rodeo contestants aren't just great athletes, but wonderful people," said PRCA Commissioner Troy Ellerman. "They are the biggest-hearted, most unselfish people I know. They help others when no one's looking."
The Legends of the ProRodeo is hosted annually during the Wrangler National Finals by international sports ministry Athletes in Action. Attendees at the Legends of ProRodeo Breakfast will hear messages from rodeo cowboy legends about their successes, challenges, families, and faith.
