New Foe Busts Atheism Boom
"Reigning Intellectual of the Evangelical Movement in the U.S." (TIME*) Dismantles New Atheists' Arguments
CHICAGO, July 2, 2008—In his new book, Atheism Remix, Dr. Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary examines atheism's surge in popularity:
- MEMBERSHIP: Atheist Alliance membership almost doubled in the past year (washingtonpost.com 2007).
- COLLEGE CAMPUSES: Last year, Harvard University hired a humanist chaplain to build a church of non-believers (atheists and agnostics) on campus due to the demand and surge of new atheist "believers."
- POPULAR CULTURE: Anti-God New York Times best-sellers by Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Daniel Dennett (Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon), Sam Harris (The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason) and Christopher Hitchens (god is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything) sell off the shelves
- NONBELIEVERS: The number of people who do not believe in God has tripled since Sept. 11, 2001 (Gallup 2001 and 2007).
- CONFUSED FOLLOWERS: 21 percent of atheists still admit to believing in God (Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life 2008).
Atheism Remix methodically dismantles the arguments of "The Four Horsemen of the new atheist apocalypse" (Page 29)-best-selling pop authors Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens-and ascribes to them an agenda that threatens the very foundations of Christianity.
With "recent polls and surveys indicating that an increasing percentage of Americans are identifying as atheists or agnostics" (Page 87) and with New Atheism's "evangelistic intent," (Page 2), Atheism Remix equips Christians to combat the dogma head-on:
"The Christian church must respond to the challenge of New Atheism with the full measure of conviction. We are reminded that the church has faced a constellation of theological challenges throughout its history. Then, as now, the task is to articulate, communicate and defend the Christian faith with intellectual integrity and evangelistic urgency." (Page 96)
Radio host, blogger and author, Dr. Mohler is frequently tapped for his insight and expertise on religious issues and culture by media-ABC, NBC, CNN, PBS, The New York Times and USA Today- and was dubbed "the reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S." by TIME in 2003.
Published by Crossway Books & Bibles and arriving in stores nationwide on July 31, 2008, Atheism Remix outlines the history of atheism, the development of the New Atheism movement and the Christian response.
